Preventing Leptospirosis and Rainy Season Diseases in Yogyakarta: City Government’s Warning and Prevention Measures

Beritajogja.com (Jogja) – The Yogyakarta City Government is wary of diseases that are prone to appearing in the rainy season, such as Leptospirosis.

The disease caused by Leptospira bacteria from rat urine is more easily spread through flowing water or puddles when it rains. For this reason, the public is expected to be vigilant in preventing Leptospirosis.

Head of the Disease Control and Prevention Division and Data Management and Health Information Systems at the Yogyakarta City Health Office, Lana Unwanah, said that several diseases that appear in the rainy season, such as leptospirosis, diarrhea, dengue fever, flu and skin diseases, are always a concern for the Yogyakarta City Health Office during the rainy season.

An appeal regarding awareness and prevention of Leptospirosis has been conveyed to the public.

“Diseases such as Leptospirosis are always a concern for the Health Service when the rainy season enters. We have conveyed an appeal to the public,” said Lana on Monday (29/1/2024).

Lana explained that Leptospirosis can be transmitted directly through blood, urine or other body fluids containing Leptospira bacteria entering the body and direct transmission from animals infected with Leptospira bacteria to humans.

Meanwhile, indirect transmission occurs through puddles, rivers, lakes, drains and mud contaminated with urine from animals infected with Leptospirosis.

“It can be transmitted through rat urine infected with leptospira bacteria. The bacteria enter through abrasions on the skin or mucous membranes when in contact with stagnant river water, sewers, mud contaminated with rat urine,” he explained.

Lana said that the incubation period for Leptospirosis is usually an average of 7 – 10 days.

Symptoms of a body infected with Leptospirosis include fever, headache, muscle aches, especially in the calves, thighs, yellow eyes and not urinating for up to 6 hours after the previous 2-5 days.

If you experience these symptoms and do work that risks exposure to rat urine, you should immediately check with the nearest health service facility or community health center.
