Preventing Aquaplaning: Tips for Safe Driving in Wet Conditions on Toll Roads

Jakarta

The Kijang Innova almost rolled over after overtaking at high speed on the toll road. This is a lesson so that this incident does not happen again in the future.

The Kijang Innova spun 3 times and almost rolled over on the Sidoarjo toll road. Before turning, the Innova overtook from the left side and appeared to be traveling at high speed. After passing the car that was overtaken, the Innova then turned right, left and right again. Luckily the car did not roll over and the driver was able to continue his journey.

From this incident, there is a lesson that can be learned so that it does not happen again in the future. Especially when you drive on wet road surfaces. The phenomenon experienced by the Kijang Innova is also called aquaplaning. For your information, aquaplaning is one of the causes of accidents and can have very fatal consequences.

As explained by Senior Instructor SDCI (Safety Defensive Consultant Indonesia), Sony Susmana, aquaplaning is a phenomenon where car tires lose traction when passing through puddles of water at high speed. The effect is that the car feels like it is floating on water. Even though it is very dangerous, conditions like this can be anticipated.

“When driving in rainy conditions, what you have to do is reduce speed, then move to the slow lane, and observe the surrounding conditions. If you have poor visibility, help by turning on the main lights. Don’t turn on the hazard lights when it’s raining, because it will make rear drivers confused. Sony said recently.

“Then when passing through puddles of water, the anticipation is to lift your foot from the gas pedal, hold the steering wheel forward and don’t brake so that the car stays straight and doesn’t skid,” he continued.

Sony also explained that if a slippage occurs, you can try to feel the slippage occurring on the front or rear wheels. If the slip comes from the front wheels (understeer) and the car is heading left or right, immediately gently counter-steer towards the destination, to minimize symptoms of understeer.

However, if skidding occurs on the rear wheels, aka oversteer, immediately turn the steer in the direction of the car and do not swerve to make the car spin on its axis. But what you need to remember is that the level of success is very much determined by the situation and conditions.
