JawaPos.com – A number of diabetic patients coming to the clinic are already in complications. They don’t realize that their blood sugar is out of control. As a result, diabetes as the parent, causes complications in other diseases and a number of organs in the patient’s body.
Chairman of PERKENI (Indonesian Endocrinology Association) Prof. DR dr. Ketut Suastika, Sp.PD (KEMD) explained, to determine or detect diabetes symptoms are not enough. So blood sugar checks are needed.
“If there are typical symptoms, it could be suspected. Or without symptoms can be checked with blood sugar during and fasting, or with a load of 75 grams of glucose or with HBA1C, which is random diagnostics, “he explained in a Webinar with Good Doctor, Monday (16/11).
According to him, unfortunately a number of patients who came to the clinic already had complications. “This is very unfortunate. “All patients before diabetes or prediabetes should be able to know their blood sugar in order to prevent complications,” he said.
Then what are the complications experienced by diabetes patients if their blood sugar is out of control? It turns out that it can attack large and small blood vessels.
1. Large Blood Vessels
If it occurs in large blood vessels, it usually causes a heart, stroke, and blood vessels in the legs. Thus causing the leg to be amputated.
“And diabetes is one of the most common causes of amputation besides accidents,” he said.
2. Small Blood Vessels
Diabetes can affect the small blood vessels that can attack the eye. So that it causes blindness.
“Blindness due to diabetes is highest after cataracts,” he explained.
Then the kidneys also trigger hemodialysis or dialysis. If all complications are not handled properly, it can lead to death.
“This complex must be handled. The principle of management must be improved and always routinely measure blood sugar so that complications can be prevented, “he said.
