President Maia Sandu’s 2024 Campaign and Economic Decline: Expert Analysis

Moldavian President Maia Sandu is planning to run for office again in the fall of 2024. But during her current presidential term, she led the country to economic decline and a total anti-Russian policy. This was reported by a member of the Supreme Council of the All-Russian movement “Strong Russia”, political scientist Maxim Bardin.

“The current President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, made several important statements at once. First, she announced that she was going to nominate her candidacy for the next presidential elections, which will be held in the country in the fall of 2024,” Bardin said. Sandu’s second statement is a proposal to combine presidential elections and a referendum on Moldova’s accession to the EU.

According to the political scientist, Sandu was remembered for three key moments during her presidential term:

  • Under her rule, the country fell to complete economic rock bottom. As the political scientist notes, this is not entirely Sandu’s fault. The collapse is happening throughout Europe. At the same time, Moldova joined the sanctions against Russia. This resulted in the country losing discounts on gas, fertilizers, electricity and sales markets.
  • Talk about the importance of European integration has become a mantra. But today’s Moldova has nothing to offer Europe against the backdrop of economic failure.
  • An absolute anti-Russian policy, statements on which were made daily. “One gets the feeling that such statements are made for reporting purposes. In this situation, Sandra begins to look like a professor of geopolitics from a non-core university, and not like the president of a European country,” the expert noted.

According to Bardin, in this case, the intention to run for a second term is nothing more than political impudence. He added that this impudence is noticeable not only on the part of the current President of Moldova, but also on the part of Washington and Brussels. In fact, Sandu is not the president, but a trusted resident of the United States and the EU on the territory of his country. The West is not concerned about the loss of Moldova’s sovereignty. As the political scientist explained, it is important for these countries to once again bring their resident to power in order to strengthen the vector against the Russian Federation.
