President Jokowi Declares National Defense Data Cannot Be Disclosed in Presidential Election Debate

SERANG, KOMPAS.com – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) said that not all data regarding national defense can be disclosed in open forums such as the presidential election debate (pilpres).

Jokowi said that a lot of defense data must be kept secret because it concerns a country’s strategy.

“There are things related to defense, things related to state security, things related to defense equipment (the main equipment for weapons systems), but there are many things we have to keep secret,” said Jokowi in Serang, Banten, Monday (8/1/ 2024).

“Because this concerns a country’s big strategy, everything cannot be opened like grocery stores can’t. No way,” he emphasized again.

It is known that presidential candidate number 2, who also serves as Minister of Defense (Menhan), Prabowo Subianto, was asked to reveal a number of data related to defense in the third presidential election debate which was held on Sunday (1/8/2024) evening.

Presidential candidate number 1, Anies Baswedan and presidential candidate number 3, Ganjar Pranowo both asked Prabowo Subianto to reveal a number of defense data.

For example, data on minimum essential force (MEF) and procurement of used defense equipment.

The request to open the data was made by Ganjar and Anies because Prabowo had stated that the data related to defense held by his two opponents was incorrect.

However, Prabowo did not reveal the correct data on the grounds that he did not have enough time to explain it in the presidential candidate debate forum.

Prabowo actually said he was willing to explain the data to Anies and Ganjar in another forum outside the presidential candidate debate forum.
