The Unusual Claim

President Joe Biden recently stirred controversy when he suggested that his uncle’s remains were unable to be recovered following a plane crash in New Guinea during World War II due to the presence of cannibals in the region. Biden made the statement during his visit to the United Steelworkers Headquarters in Pittsburgh, echoing a narrative that differs from the account published by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting agency.

Conflicting Accounts of the Tragic Incident

The Defense POW/MIA Accounting agency reported that Biden’s uncle, Ambrose Finnegan, was flying a courier flight to New Guinea when his plane, an A-20 Havoc, was forced to ditch in the ocean off the coast of the island for unknown reasons. Three of the crew members, including Finnegan, were unable to emerge from the sinking wreck and were lost in the crash. Unexpectedly, an aerial search the following day found no trace of the missing aircraft or the lost crew members. However, an additional crew member did survive the crash.

President Biden’s Valid Claim

President Biden’s claim that the military was ultimately unable to recover his uncle’s remains appears to be true. Ambrose Finnegan is memorialized on the Walls of the Missing at the Manila American Cemetery in the Philippines, and Biden paid his respects at a veterans’ memorial in Scranton, Pennsylvania, earlier on the same day. White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates has affirmed Biden’s pride in his uncle’s service and willingness to honor the commitment to those who among the “suckers” or “losers” as previously highlighted.

Examining the Possibility of Cannibalism

President Biden’s remark about the presence of cannibals in the New Guinea region had sparked curiosity. Indeed, there is documentation of cannibalism in the region during the mid-20th century. However, the Biden administration, specifically the White House, did not provide further details regarding Biden’s claim or present an official stance.

Biden’s Statement in the Context of Previous Remarks and Controversy

Biden’s comments about the cannibals preventing the recovery of his uncle’s remains were made in the context of his criticism of former President Donald Trump. Biden was condemning a 2020 report that alleged Trump had made derogatory comments about fallen service members and chose to skip a ceremony honoring veterans. Although Trump has disputed these reports, former White House Chief of Staff John Kelly later confirmed the allegations.
