President-elect of Argentina Javier Milei will meet with one of Biden’s main advisors

The president-elect of Argentina, the right-wing Javier Milei, will meet with President Joe Biden’s national security advisor on Tuesday in Washington, the White House reported.

National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told reporters Monday that Milei will meet with White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan and other administration officials. Biden will not meet with Milei because on Tuesday she will be traveling to Georgia to attend a funeral for former first lady Rosalynn Carter and will later visit Colorado.

The Treasury Department said in a statement that Milei’s economic policy advisers will also meet with senior Treasury officials on Tuesday. The meeting is scheduled to revolve around the economic priorities of the next Milei government.

“We want to continue looking for ways to cooperate with Argentina,” said Kirby. “Argentina is a healthy and vibrant partner in this hemisphere in many, many ways. So, we obviously look forward to hearing the president-elect’s ideas and where he wants to go on policy issues, and having the opportunity to keep that line of communication open.”

Milei’s meetings in Washington “are protocol to explain the economic plan: fiscal adjustment, monetary reform, state reform and deregulation,” said a Milei spokesman, who declined to be identified because he was not authorized to make public statements. . “It is not in search of financing.”

Milei, who has been compared to former US President Donald Trump, was elected a few days ago, and his inauguration is scheduled for December 10. The president-elect has spoken in good terms of Trump, and noted that the now Republican candidate called him last week to congratulate him and inform him that he would travel to Argentina to meet with him.

The conversation with the former president, who leads the preferences in the Republican Party towards 2024, occurred hours after Biden contacted Milei.

The White House noted that Biden congratulated Milei and spoke of the “strong relationship between the United States and Argentina on economic matters, on regional and multilateral cooperation, and on shared priorities, including the protection of human rights, addressing food insecurity and investment in clean energy.”

Milei was in New York City on Monday, and the main reason for his trip to Washington would be to talk with officials from the International Monetary Fund, according to Kirby.

While in New York, Milei visited the grave of Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, who led the Chabad-Lubavitch movement for more than four decades until his death in 1994. Thousands of Jews, and some dignitaries, visit Schneerson’s grave annually. which is located in a cemetery in Queens.

Milei, a Catholic, has studied the Torah for several years and has spoken openly of his respect for Judaism. Although he has expressed a desire to convert to Judaism, he has not formally started the process, although he claims that he is close.

Milei has also expressed strong support for Israel, before and after winning the presidential election. During her campaign she often waved an Israeli flag during her rallies.

The president-elect of Argentina wants to move his country’s embassy in Israel from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, emulating what Trump did.

“I do not go to church; I go to the temple. I don’t talk to priests; I have a primary rabbi. I study Torah,” Milei said during an interview last August. “He is internationally recognized as a friend of Israel and a Torah scholar.”
