Preservation of Natural Sites: CEN Allier’s Partnership with Désertines and Domérat for the Conservation of Moorlands

For two years now, the Allier Conservatory of Natural Spaces (CEN Allier) has been involved in the preservation of natural sites around Montluçon, between moors and limestone grasslands. Very recently, a partnership was concluded with the municipalities of Désertines and Domérat on two major landes, La Petite Suisse and Le Peu de la Crou, through the signing of two Real Environmental Obligations (ORE), which will make it possible to preserve, on the long term, the biodiversity of these two moorland sites.

Natural environments to preserve

The moors are so-called thermophilic environments (hot and dry), where a particular fauna and flora develop. They were formerly maintained by grazing. Abandoned in favor of meadows, which are much more productive and easy to maintain, the moors are aging and evolving into forest formations, leading to the disappearance of the species typical of these environments.

Restoration actions needed

These are rare natural habitats in the department since the west of the Allier is located on the eastern limit of the distribution area of the moors. As with other natural environments, such as ponds, restoration actions are regularly necessary to ensure the maintenance of these natural areas.

“Anxious to preserve these natural habitats and the fauna and flora species associated with them”, the communes of Domérat and Désertines have therefore chosen to commit themselves to CEN Allier on these two sites. The wet moor of Peu de la Crou, in Domérat, with an area of 5.27 hectares, and the dry moors of Petite Suisse, in Désertines, with an area of 25.13 hectares. The OREs were signed for a period of 20 years, with tacit renewal for another 20 years.
