Prescott prepares to take the Cowboys’ attack on the Lions

FRISCO, Texas – Dak Prescott will be “series leader” for Cowboys training, the latest clue that the Dallas quarterback will regain control of Sunday’s bout against the Detroit Lions after a five-game absence due to an injury.

Manager Mike McCarthy left little doubt about Prescott’s return following a broken thumb on his throwing hand. The quarterback said over the weekend that he was hoping to play Detroit.

Prescott threw 40 passes during a shortened free practice session Wednesday following Dallas’ defeat in Philadelphia.

“I thought he was really fine,” McCarthy said. “We are looking to expand on this (Thursday) and put him in the lead with regards to offensive units just to give him a chance to get ready to play.”

The Cowboys (4-2) lost 26-17 to the undefeated Eagles in a game where first place in the NFC East was at stake.

Now they face Lions (1-4), one of two NFC teams that have only won one game this season. Dallas will host the Chicago Bears, another struggling rival next week.

The Cowboys have won four in a row with Cooper Rush replacing Prescott after the 2016 NFL offensive rookie of the year suffered a fractured right thumb in the opening defeat of the season to Tampa Bay.

The streak of streak brought Rush’s career record to 5-0, including a win last season at Minnesota.

Although Rush no longer has a perfect record, the Cowboys are one of only four NFC teams with a six-game winning record. Three of these teams are in the same division.

McCarthy noted that one factor Dallas remained in contention without Prescott was the preseason schedule put together by their players in California.

“I think it’s a credit to the whole team, especially what Cooper Rush was able to do,” McCarthy said. “I think it’s all of these things, they add up and then it’s about keeping the train on the tracks.”
