Preparing for the Back-to-School Season: Organizing Textbook and School Supply Purchases

The clock is ticking fast and in a little over two weeks, on September 11, students will return to the classroom in Galicia. With the start of the new school year just around the corner, many parents are already organizing the purchase of textbooks and school supplies for their children.

According to statistics, on average, Galician parents will spend around 392 euros per child this season, a slightly lower figure compared to the national average of 402 euros. Of this amount, almost half, approximately 200 euros, goes to the purchase of textbooks, which reflects the importance of this component in the list of school supplies.

The cost of textbooks has experienced an increase of 8% compared to last year, while school supplies have seen an even higher increase in prices. Santi Mayo, a bookstore owner in Santiago, reports on these trends from his point of view in the business. The final price of the books can vary considerably depending on the school, since some institutions require a larger number of books than others.

Public aid for the purchase of material

To alleviate the financial burden that this period implies, the Ministry of Education has implemented measures to provide support to families. Solidarity book funds and aid items have been established that can reach up to 300 euros per family, adjusting according to income levels. These grants are welcome help for many families facing financial hardship.

Despite these aids, parents still feel resigned to the expense that inevitably comes at the end of the summer. Investing in their children’s education is a priority, and many consider spending on books and school supplies a valuable investment in their children’s future.

In addition to government initiatives, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) also play a crucial role this season. Cáritas, for example, is carrying out a campaign in A Coruña to provide school supplies to needy families. Ángeles Ferreño is in charge of leading this program that seeks to provide additional support to those who face financial difficulties during this period.
