The English Premier League’s plans to resume play in June due to the coronavirus pandemic picked up on Thursday. Oliver Dowden, the British Minister for Culture and Sports, stressed that the government opened the door for football to return in June.
After a “positive” meeting with representatives of the Premier League, the English Football League and the national association (FA), Dowden described the previous plans as “convincing”. It is now up to the football managers to fix the final concept and, above all, to agree on it. So far, there has been talk of resuming league operations, which have been suspended since mid-March, on June 12 or 19, and the games will then take place in front of empty ranks. So far 29 of 38 rounds have been completed. The Premier League wants to discuss the plans again on Monday.
Due to the interruption, it would definitely have to be played until July in order to be able to choose the master on the lawn. This creates the problem that some players’ contracts expire on June 30 during the season. “We decided today that we want to ensure as soon as possible that the teams finish the season with the same squad that they had before the pandemic,” said Premier Masters chief Richard Masters. The players could sign short-term contract extensions. “Of course, there must be mutual agreement,” said Masters, who named June 23 as the deadline for agreements.
