Pregnant women with HIV, what should be done so that their children are not infected?

Jakarta

World AIDS Day 2021 which is commemorated on December 1, 2021 is also a concern for mothers. In many cases, transmission occurs from mother to child in the process of pregnancy to childbirth.

Actually, can a mother with HIV get pregnant and have children?

HIV infection or human immunodeficiency virus can attack anyone, including housewives. If not treated properly, this infection can progress to AIDS or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.

For a mother, getting pregnant with HIV is not an easy matter. This virus can be transmitted or transmitted at any time through placental fluid.

The risk of transmission can also occur during childbirth, through the blood released by the mother. Likewise, when the membranes rupture, the risk of transmission from mother to child can also occur.

“Most babies get HIV at the time of delivery,” writes American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG).

As is known, HIV is transmitted mainly through body fluids such as blood and sperm. Apart from having unprotected sex, HIV is also transmitted through the use of unsterilized needles and from mother to child in the process of pregnancy to childbirth.

However, it is still possible for mothers with HIV to get pregnant and have children without having to transmit the virus to their children.

How to do it?

There are 5 ways that can be done to prevent the transmission of HIV from mother to child during pregnancy to delivery:

  1. Take a combination of anti-HIV drugs during pregnancy as prescribed by your doctor.
  2. Delivery can be done by caesarean section if the results of laboratory tests show that the HIV level is high.
  3. Take anti-HIV medication during labor and delivery as needed.
  4. Give anti-HIV drugs to the baby after birth.
  5. Do not breastfeed because it can increase the risk of transmitting HIV to the baby.
