A stranger shot a pregnant woman on the street in Philadelphia on Saturday night. As «CBS Philly» reported that the 32-year-old was on the way home from her own baby shower when she was shot in the stomach and head. Police officers who were nearby and heard the gunshots alerted the ambulance, who took the woman to the nearest hospital. Shortly afterwards, she succumbed to her injuries. A few minutes later, the doctors also had to declare the unborn child dead.
Police said the pregnant woman was carrying gifts from her baby shower when she was shot.
On Sunday morning, Mayor Jim Kenney tweeted the shooting, saying he was deeply shocked and heartbroken by the news. “My condolences go out to the relatives of the victim at this painful time.”
The deputy chief of police Christine Coulter told the media: “We’re doing everything we can, we’ve got a record number of guns off the streets, but we still want to do more,” she said. “We need everyone in town, including the elected officials, police officers and every person who lives in every house in Philadelphia, to get as angry as possible about this issue.”
The city has offered a $ 50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest. So far, no arrests have been made and no weapons have been seized, the authority said in its statement.
According to «ABC News» Philadelphia authorities had investigated 491 homicides in 2021 by the beginning of this weekend. This corresponds to an increase of 13 percent compared to the same period in 2020.
