Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers can already be vaccinated against Covid-19

Suara.com – Expert Team Leader Covid-19 Handling Task Force, Wiku Adisasmito said that the Covid-19 vaccine can already be given to pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers.

“Efforts to provide Covid-19 vaccination targeting pregnant women have been recommended by the National Immunization Expert Advisory Committee or ITAGI,” said Wiku in an online press conference, Tuesday (10/8/2021).

He said the screening process or screening before vaccination against pregnant women needed to be done in more detail than other targets.

“Vaccination can only be given to pregnant women whose gestational age is 13 weeks and is in the second trimester of pregnancy,” he explained.

He added, if you have comorbidities under controlled conditions and there are no acute complications, the vaccine can be given. In addition, Wiku said, the Ministry of Health also stated that the Covid-19 vaccination was safe for breastfeeding mothers.

“Before being vaccinated, breastfeeding mothers are recommended to consult about their health condition with a doctor or health worker first and are in a fit condition to receive the vaccine,” he said.

After the vaccine, he continued, breastfeeding mothers are still safe to breastfeed their children. Because breastfeeding and skin-to-skin contact can significantly reduce the risk of infant mortality and have benefits that outweigh the potential risk of transmitting Covid-19.

Previously, the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia issued a circular regarding the Covid-19 vaccination for pregnant women and adjustments to screening in the implementation of the vaccination.

“Starting on August 2, 2021, the Covid-19 vaccination can be started for pregnant women with priority in high risk areas,” wrote Plt. Director General of Disease Prevention and Control of the Ministry of Health Maxi Rein Rondonuwu in the circular letter.
