Presidential candidate number 2 Prabowo Subianto asked presidential candidate number 1 Anies Baswedan about the overseas scholarship program. Anies answered by considering the urgency.
Initially, Prabowo explained that currently the death rate in Indonesia was still high. This is partly because Indonesia lacks doctors.
“Mr Anies, we understand earlier, Indonesia’s death rate or life span is quite worrying. The problem is a shortage of doctors,” said on the stage of the fifth debate at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Senayan, Central Jakarta, Sunday (4/2/ 2024).

Prabowo admitted that he had a scholarship program abroad. Prabowo asked Anies whether he agreed with the program.
“Do you agree with my idea to massively send 10 thousand of our children abroad with full scholarships to study medicine, science, technology, engineering, mathematics? As an emergency measure to overcome this difficulty,” asked Prabowo.
Anies admitted that he agreed that this was to increase competence. Because competence is definitely useful.
“We agree with the principle of increasing competence, sir. Because increasing competence will be beneficial anyway,” answered Anies.
However, Anies said this was a matter of urgency. The state must talk to stakeholders.
“The issue is that we have to look at what is urgent today. And who should we talk to? Talk to stakeholders,” he said.
Anies explained that stakeholders best understand the problems in the field. They range from professional associations to activists.
“The state has the authority. But once again we have to talk about the knowledge and situation in the field with stakeholders. Who are they? Professional associations, then the Ministry of Health, regional services, activists, observers, experts,” he said.
From there, the government can later collect data. Not by jumping to conclusions about what is needed.
“Collect the data, see what is needed so that we don’t jump straight to ‘this is what is needed’,” he said.
Anies emphasized that he agreed about competency development. However, Anies believes that the elements of importance and urgency need to be considered.
“We see that competency development is good. But ensuring that it is in accordance with existing data so that what we invest can answer needs. So there is an important element, there is an element of urgency,” he explained.
