“But of course we have to prioritize the interests of our own people and our national interests. There are still many of our people whose lives are still difficult, so it’s not fair if we have to accept all the refugees, it’s our burden, even though from a humanitarian perspective we also have a sense of solidarity and want to help. and so on,” he said.

“So this requires an integralistic approach, but once again in the end we have to protect the interests of our nation and the people,” he said.

As previously reported, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Kemlu) urged countries that ratified the Rohingya refugee convention to find a solution regarding the wave of Rohingya ethnic refugees in Indonesia. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the Rohingya ethnic group was still being accommodated because Indonesia prioritizes humanitarian principles.

As is known, Indonesia is not a signatory to the 1951 Refugee Convention. However, Indonesia has been accepting Rohingya refugees for humanitarian reasons.

“What is clear is that, even though we are not members or parties to the refugee convention, Indonesia prioritizes humanitarian principles, so that Indonesia continues to accept the presence of these people, providing temporary shelter or accommodation,” said Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Lalu Muhammad Iqbal in Menteng area, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (20/12).

“We hope that countries that are parties to the convention on refugees and also international organizations will show more responsibility in handling Rohingya migrants,” he said.
