The government has extended the PPnBM discount program or so-called PPnBM DTP (sales tax on luxury goods borne by the government). After being successful in 2021, this PPnBM discount will be continued in 2022.
The Ministry of Industry (Kemenperin) said that this tax relaxation program had helped revive the Indonesian automotive industry. The Ministry of Industry noted that car sales for PPnBM DTP participants last year in the March-December 2021 period reached 519 thousand units, an increase of 113% (275 thousand units) from the same period the previous year. This increase contributed significantly to the growth of the transportation equipment industry in the second and third quarters of 2021 by 45.2% (yoy) and 27.8% (yoy).
In addition, in the manufacturing process, participants in the PPnBM DTP program have involved as many as 319 Tier 1 component industrial companies, of course this has boosted the performance of Tier 2 and 3 component industries, most of which belong to the small and medium industry (IKM) category.
“With the extension of PPnBM DTP incentives in 2022, it will maintain the growth momentum of the national automotive industry while increasing the utilization and performance of the automotive component industry sector, including IKM,” said Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita in a written statement, Tuesday (18/1).
From data from the Association of Indonesian Automotive Industries (Gaikindo), car sales in wholesales (factories to dealers) and retail sales (dealers to consumers) increased significantly. The growth reached 66.6% for wholesale sales and 49.2% (yoy) for retail. Total car sales (wholesales) throughout 2021 were recorded at 887,200 units and retail sales reached 863,359 units.
According to Chairman I of Gaikindo, Jongkie D Sugiarto, the impact of PPnBM incentives cannot be underestimated. Moreover, the automotive industry is one of the contributors to the country’s economy and provides employment opportunities.
“Just look at the sales figures before and after March 2021, the influence of PPnBM DTP is very large. We have provided input to the government through the Ministry of Industry,” he said.
Gaikindo targets car sales in 2022 to reach 900 thousand units. Actually, this figure is still lower than car sales during normal conditions before the COVID-19 pandemic, which reached 1 million units per year.
According to him, the PPnBM DTP incentive for cars will also have an impact on sales achievement this year. Moreover, PPnBM incentives do not only provide benefits to the automotive industry. The motor vehicle supporting industry, the community, and the government are considered to feel the sweetness of the tax exemption.
