Powerful cyber defense center opens in Manhattan to protect New York

In New York City, the hidden world of cyber defense will rise up in one of Manhattan’s skyscrapers, revealed this morning the Wall Street Journal. Called Cyber ​​Critical Services and Infrastructure (CCSI), it will act in times of crisis, in particular for infrastructure cyber attacks, which threaten large cities, including the American economic capital.

The initiative was first discussed in 2017, the newspaper recalled. However, the project was not intended to result in a real physical cybersecurity center. The agreement between several actors should only be virtual. Today, the new CCSI brings together powerful players such as Amazon, IBM, the Federal Reserve Bank in collaboration with the New York police.

Cyber ​​attacks on infrastructure are a real scourge and could have serious consequences. Today, most city services are supported by IT management. New York and its more than 8.4 million inhabitants fear such an event. In May, the cyberattack of the biggest American pipeline manager had damaged the country and given the chills to the price of oil.

Union strategy in difficult times

According to our colleagues fromEngadget, in the event of a cyber attack, the members of the new cyber defense center “Will cooperate closely to both overcome the attack and mobilize a city response if the digital offensive hinders New York’s infrastructure”. A strategy of gathering resources to act more effectively, and which follows the logic of the federal state, which now attributes the same importance cyber attacks than the terrorist threat.

In Europe, the trend is also to collaboration. France has proposed an initiative to bring together “The resources and expertise available to the EU and its Member States to prevent, deter and respond to massive cybersecurity incidents and crises, all effectively”. This led to the creation of a digital platform and a physical organization. French President Emmanuel Macron has also released a plan of one million euros spread until 2025.

Finally, note that the United States is today the first global target cyber attacks. In a study published by Statista, a map shows the countries that had suffered the most cyberattacks since 2006. The United States was moving at an average rate of 10 per year, with 156 cyberattacks in total, until 2020.
