PostNL advice to consumer: ‘Wait a while before returning parcels’

In order to be able to deliver as many parcels as possible on time, PostNL is taking a number of measures. Fewer parcels are collected from web shops than normal and consumers are asked to hold on to parcels that need to be returned. According to PostNL, it is the only way to deliver 95 percent of the parcels on the promised time.

In recent days, the company has had to process ten million packages. “That is really a new record,” says a PostNL spokesperson. The fact that it is so busy is due to the corona crisis, according to PostNL. The holiday period is therefore more unpredictable than other years.

More order online

Black Friday last Friday was an example of this. Locally, shops were closed because it became too busy in a number of cities. According to PostNL, this caused extra crowds at web shops and ultimately also among parcel deliverers.

Competitor DHL says it can still pick up all packages from web shops. It is also busier than expected. “We are now at 1.2 million parcels a day and can still handle it well. Last year we were at 650,000 a day around Christmas. In the peak of corona we were at 1 million,” said a spokesman.
