NEW YORK – An official-looking poster on why New Yorkers shouldn’t get the COVID-19 vaccine has appeared at an MTA bus stop, as city officials urged them to do otherwise amid a spike in infections and the appearance of the Omicron variant in the Big Apple.
It’s unclear when the ad appeared near a B43 bus stop in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, but an MTA spokesperson says the agency is not responsible for it.
“The bus stops are not owned by the MTA and while we would prefer that objectionable messages not be promoted to our customers, we do not have the power to manage the content of these facilities, which are controlled by New York City,” said the director. At the bottom of the glass-wrapped poster, readers are urged to visit a website promoting the widely discredited veterinary drug Ivermectin as one of the COVID-19 treatments. The FDA had warned Americans to stop using the dewormer over the summer, but misinformation about it has persisted.
The New York City Department of Transportation said the ad is due out Thursday, adding that its franchisee did not sell it and that someone may have opened the glass case.
