The conflict between Russia and Ukraine is about land, power and security policy – but also about history, identity and international law.
Russia and Ukraine were formerly part of the Soviet Union, which was dissolved in 1991. Since then, there has been disagreement internally in Ukraine over foreign and security policy.
On the one hand, there are those who want to join the EU and NATO. On the other those who want to keep the connection to Russia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin wants to prevent Ukraine from joining the West more closely. One of the demands he has made is that Ukraine should not become a member of NATO.
The fact that Ukraine is not a member of NATO is the reason why the alliance does not provide military support in the country when Russia now invades.
