But the advantage of this is that those locations already belong to the government,” says the spokeswoman. It is unclear when white smoke will appear over new shelters.

At such a defense location – for example an empty barracks – ‘parts of the registration process’ could then be carried out. The advantage is that the only registration center at the moment – Ter Apel – can then be relieved. Asylum seekers sleep outside there because the center is full. A new registration center must also be built in Bant, although the municipality still has to officially approve.

Asylum seekers sometimes do not dare to board a bus to be moved, because they are afraid that it will be at the expense of their procedure. By also making registration possible elsewhere in the country, the Ministry expects that this group can be better spread across the country.

According to the spokesperson, talks are ‘in an advanced stage’, although the hopeful text has been sounding for weeks. The cabinet is also aiming for asylum reception on ships. They would then have to be moored somewhere in the country, or – if this is legally and safety possible – at sea. The spokeswoman says that discussions about suitable locations are still ongoing, as is the investigation into shelter at sea.

In the meantime, there has been too little space in the asylum reception for months and the influx has recently increased sharply. There are more than 43 thousand migrants in asylum reception, of which almost 16 thousand with residence permits are waiting for a home.
