Portugal coach insists Ronaldo remains captain

Jakarta

Cristiano Ronaldo highlighted sharply after his frustrating action against Serbia. Trainer Portugal Fernando Santos expressed his defense of the captain.

Portugal was held to a 2-2 draw by Serbia at Red Star Stadium, Sunday (28/3/2021) early morning WIB in the 2022 World Cup Qualification. Had a two-goal lead thanks to Diogo Jota, Portugal was broken into by opponents through Aleksandar Mitrovic and Filip Kostic.

Controversy broke out in the last minute. Cristiano Ronaldo scored a goal, but the referee did not approve it because the ball was deemed not to cross the goal line.

In fact, the opposite happens: replays show the ball has indeed entered completely into the goal. The problem is that there is no goal line technology or Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to correct referee decisions.

CR7 also strongly protested with the referee’s decision. As a result, he got a yellow card from referee Danny Makkelie. Ronaldo’s protests continued by leaving the field before the game ended. He even took off and then slammed his captain’s armband.

Despite his disappointment, Ronaldo’s actions have received sharp scrutiny. As a team leader, he was deemed not deserving of leaving the field just like that and throwing the captain’s armband.

His compatriot, Fernando Meira, was one of those who criticized him. But Portugal coach Fernando Santos insisted that the incident had not changed anything: Ronaldo was still the captain, especially since he had already apologized.

“It was just a moment of frustration. Cristiano will remain captain. He is an example for everyone,” he was quoted as saying Football Italia.

“If he offends the coach or his team-mates, we will think about what happened, but this didn’t happen, did he? He always wanted to win, and he was very frustrated yesterday.”

“He gave everything for his national team. He posted something on social media, 10 minutes after the match, but no one said it was sweet from him,” added Fernando Santos.
