NEW JERSEY — On Wednesday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced the completion of a new $47.2 million station at the Harrison stop on the PATH commuter rail, in the latest step toward modernizing multiple transit center facilities. regional by the Port Authority.

The newly built 3,200-square-foot station opened to the public at 3 p.m. on Wednesday. It has new amenities such as an elevator; a public plaza with seating; 82 bicycle parking spaces along a 17,800-square-foot esplanade; and a dedicated turnstile that accepts TAPP, PATH’s new contactless fare payment.

Other turnstiles at the station continue to accept existing PATH fare payment systems, such as SmartLink and MetroCard.

The station replacement project was funded in part by a $40.7 million grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA).

“Today’s announcement [miércoles] marks another milestone in the comprehensive modernization of our regional transportation system,” said New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy. “I applaud the Port Authority for the vision through which this project was conceived. The combination of technology “state-of-the-art with sustainable and resilient practices will ensure that New Jersey commuters have a world-class mode of transportation to get where they need to go while benefiting our regional economy as a whole.”

The original station, built in 1936, had become outdated and obsolete due to modern transportation needs and was demolished to make way for a more modern and accessible replacement. The new facility was built with special attention to resilience and sustainability, meeting the rigorous standards of the Port Authority.

“The PATH commuter rail has fueled the economic growth and development of Harrison and its surrounding communities into a desirable residential area and hub of activity by providing easy access to businesses and cultural attractions,” said the president. Port Authority, Kevin O’Toole. “The Port Authority’s $256 million investment in Harrison is generating large-scale benefits for this community as more people discover this not-so-hidden gem as a destination and a great place to live.”

The station was designed with enhanced flood protection from the nearby Passaic River, with the first level of the station located above the floodplain. Runoff water will be collected and stored in water holding tanks for landscape irrigation.

The new station is the latest step forward in the Port Authority’s $256 million transformation of the sprawling PATH Harrison station complex into a vital transportation hub in the region. The new facility located in the southwest corner of the Harrison Station complex, provides safe pedestrian access to Harrison Station without the need to cross busy Frank E. Rodgers Boulevard. It complements a station in the northeast section of the complex completed in 2018 and a second station that opened in 2019 in the southeast section of the complex.

“This is a special day for PATH and for all the men and women who poured their hearts and souls into creating this impressive new station,” said Clarelle DeGraffe, general manager and director of PATH. “Our long-standing mission is to continually improve service and access to the best facilities for our customers, and today is another powerful example of that commitment.”

At its peak, the station served 2.6 million passengers in 2019, before the pandemic, and has since recovered to more than 1.7 million passengers in 2023.
