The number of Targa versions of the Porsche 911 has been manageable for years. The bracket model was created in the mid-1960s to meet the strict US crash regulations with a convertible. After the Targa in generations 993 (1993–1998), 996 (1997–2006) and 997 (2004–2012) deteriorated into a 911 with a large sunroof, the last generation received a real Targa with bracket and glass dome again in 2014.
This is made possible by the fact that the Targa has been a convertible version of the 911 for six years. However, not with a fabric roof that is completely hidden in the body, but consists of two parts: the roof element and the glass dome. The roof element disappears under the glass dome when you open it nowhere. Now the new 911, launched a year ago, also receives a chic Targa variant, the third body version after the coupé and convertible, with the same technical solution for the roof. The fully automatic process takes 19 seconds to open and close. The current Targa can also be recognized by the contours in the bonnet, the continuous LED light strip at the rear and, if extended, the powerful rear spoiler.

Six cylinders for four wheels
Porsche only offers the unique mix of convertible and coupé, which in this way is only available with the Corvette and Mazda MX-5 RF, only with 4×4. A variant with rear-wheel drive was not and is not planned. The four wheels are driven by a six-cylinder boxer engine with a displacement of three liters and double turbocharging. As with the other 911 models, it delivers either 385 hp (283 kW) and 450 Nm as the Targa or 450 hp (331 kW) and 530 Nm as the Targa 4S. The “half-open” 911 with the optional Sport Chrono Package sprints to 100 km / h in 4.2 or 3.6 seconds. That is 0.1 or 0.4 seconds faster than the predecessor. The top is 289 or 304 km / h (plus 2 or 3 km / h).

Switch and control yourself
On request, Porsche now even offers the 911 Targa 4S with a manual transmission. It is almost shameless to mention that it is explicitly stated that this does not cost any extra. A manual gearbox is not only lighter, but also significantly cheaper than the eight-speed dual clutch transmission with which the Porsche 911 is now equipped as standard. In this respect, there should at best be a reduced price. It is more interesting that the new Targa is available for the first time with distance cruise control and a programmable lift function for recurring sleepers. This saves everyday hassles.
