Popular mayors could sue Health to deliver information

The Mayor’s Associations left the door open today to go to court if the Health Department (DS) does not provide information about positive patients to COVID-19 in their respective municipalities.

The mayor of San Lorenzo, José Román, required the DS to deliver all the information related to patients in their respective municipalities in order to offer assistance and follow-up as a measure to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

“The 45 mayors of the Association, if we have to go to court we are going to go to court. We are going to enforce and we are going to respect that the information is given to the Puerto Rican people and to the municipalities,” he said in a press conference. Román, who is also president of the community that groups mayors affiliated with the Democratic People’s Party (PPD).

Over the weekend, mayors from various municipalities demanded that the DS be given information about the people who have tested positive to monitor the conditions of these patients in their respective towns.

“We make the determination to demand and request the Health Department to provide us with that information, not to mark patients, we do not want to identify or expose them, we want to help them and we want to cut the contagion line. It is the only guarantee we have left in these moments in the absence of evidence, “he said. Luis Javier Hernández, Mayor of Villalba.

He, in turn, commented that they have sometimes found out about the positives in their municipalities after they were able to implement their own monitoring and tracking systems. He added that, in some cases, the Health Department has sent COVID-19 positive people to their homes, but they do not follow up on their condition, which leads to that person not following measures such as not leaving their home or share with other people.

We do not rule out, that if the information is not made available, resort precisely to the courts so that this information becomes viable for the sake of us working no only to work with that affected family but with the environment where that family is, “said the municipal executive.
