Lisbon: Pope Francis became emotional after reaching the presence of Our Lady of Fatima and praying the rosary with the young people. In Fatima, 103 kilometers from Lisbon, the Pope arrived by helicopter and was met by people with shouts of “Viva Papa” and waving hands. About 200,000 pilgrims gathered at Fatima.
The Pope attended the rosary with a few selected young people who were sick, crippled and imprisoned at the pilgrimage center where the Holy Mother had appeared. Young men and women from different parts of the world recited the rosary with the Pope.
The First Secret of the Rosary, recited in Portuguese, was dedicated to those serving prison terms. The second secret was in Spanish. The second secret was dedicated to those attending the World Youth Summit.
A differently-abled woman presided over the third mystery offered in Italian. The mission of the fourth secret, recited in English and German, was world peace. The Fifth Secret was recited in Polish and French. The rosary concluded with the chanting of the Marian hymn beginning ‘Ave Maria’ three times, dedicated to world peace, people’s repentance and papal mandates.
The Pope’s visit to Fatima was also to seek the intercession of the Mother of God for all war-torn countries, including Ukraine. Papa had also brought a gold bead to present to the Mother of God.
Dear brothers and sisters, today we can feel the presence of the Mother of God who always tells us to ‘do whatever Jesus says’ and she points us to Jesus. We prayed the rosary. This is a prayer that brings us closer to Jesus and the Holy Virgin Mother. We have meditated on happy mysteries. The Pope added that this reminds us that the Church is a house full of joy.
This is the second time the Pope is visiting Fatima. In May 2017, on the centenary of the Holy Mother’s apparitions, Pope Francis visited Fatima as part of the associated christenings of Francis and Jacinta. On May 13, 1917, shepherd children Lucia de los Santos and siblings Francisco de los Santos and Jacinta de los Santos received their first apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
