Ponce Hospital makes urgent call to patients recovered from COVID-19 to donate plasma to the Red Cross

Lawyer Ana Cristina Muñoz, president of the San Cristóbal Group announced today that several Island hospitals have joined the plasma treatment of people recovered from COVID-19, to patients who are in serious condition. Infusion therapy has been reported to have been successful.

“The COVID 19 pandemic or coronavirus has claimed too many deaths in Puerto Rico and throughout the world, so we should NOT let our guard down at this time. The medical team of the San Cristóbal Hospital in Ponce has managed to join several hospital institutions in the country to develop a life-saving project: “the infusion of plasma into a critically ill patient infected with the coronavirus.” However, we want to call on all patients recovered from this pandemic, to contact the American Red Cross and immediately proceed to become plasma donors that will be used to save lives. This is very necessary and a priority at this time. ” said Ana Cristina Muñoz, president and chief executive officer of the San Cristóbal Group.

Ms. Muñoz indicated that national awareness must be created through a massive campaign where patients recovered from COVID 19 can access vital information that allows them to immediately communicate with the American Red Cross and donate plasma.

“No recovered patient should be afraid of this simple process of donating plasma that will be used as an antibody for crisis patients affected by the virus. Recently, in coordination with Mayo Clinic, entity identified as principal investigators in the United States in this therapeutic process, and in the absence of effective medications for the treatment of the deadly disease of COVID 19, the infectologist Gabriel A. Martínez, director of the Control Program of Infections of our Hospital San Cristóbal together with a support team managed to identify a compatible plasma from a patient who was infected with the coronavirus, who in his convalescent state passed all the tests to be free of it. As the doctor informed the press, for this virus there is no specific treatment. Infusion therapy worked successfully in this patient, to the point that a period of 48 hours showed significant clinical improvement. There are other hospitals in Puerto Rico that have performed the same procedure saving the life of the patient receiving the infusion. We urge recovered patients to donate plasma using the American Red Cross as a vehicle, “concluded the president of the San Cristóbal Group.
