Pompeo threatens sanctions on anyone who sells weapons to Iran – Abroad – News

Pomepo issued such a warning following Tehran’s announcement that the 13-year-long conventional arms embargo on Iran had come to an end.

“The United States is ready to use its authorities to impose sanctions on all individuals and organizations involved in the arms trade with Iran,” Pompeo said.

“All countries that want peace and stability in the Middle East and support the fight against terrorism should refrain from arms deals with Iran,” Pompeo said.

According to the UN resolution approving the 2015 nuclear agreement between the world power and Iran, the embargo must be phased out from 18 October.

Tehran today welcomed the lifting of the ban.

Iran has stated that, under its nuclear deal with the United States, China, Britain, France, Germany and Russia, the arms embargo and travel restrictions will be lifted automatically without further action.

The United States withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2018 and renewed the sanctions that were lifted for Iran under that deal.

In mid-August, the United States failed to gain support for a draft UN Security Council resolution extending the 13-year conventional arms embargo on Iran.
