Polling stations in Germany closed: ‘Centre-left SPD and conservative CDU/CSU equal’ | Abroad

Annalena Baerbock’s climate party De Groenen did well in the polls earlier this year, but seems to remain in third place with 15 percent of the vote. Behind them are the liberal FDP and the right-wing populist party AfD, both with 11 percent. Die Linke would have just passed the 5 percent electoral threshold.

The result of the exit poll means that the CDU/CSU has lost compared to the previous elections. The SPD is on a profit.

The CDU/CSU has been the largest group in the Bundestag, the German parliament, since 2005. Merkel has ruled as chancellor ever since, but she did not want to stay on for another term after this election. That is why her CDU put forward state prime minister Laschet from North Rhine-Westphalia to succeed her. Merkel’s conservatives have ruled with Scholz’s Social Democrats in recent years.
