LONDON – Polish tennis player Iga Swiateková made it to the singles quarterfinals at the Grand Slam tournament in Wimbledon for the first time in her career. The world and seeded number one defeated fourteenth-seeded Belinda Benčičová in three sets 6:7 (4), 7:6 (2), 6:3 in a dramatic round of 16 match.

Swiss woman with Slovak roots, Benčičová, who is coached by Slovakian Matej Lipták, was close to victory. After winning the tiebreak of the first set, she led in the second set 2:0, 3:1 and had two match points at 6:5. However, Swiateková finally managed the difficult situation and stretched her winning streak to 14 meetings.

She deflected match points

“I am all the happier that I was able to win the match, even though the opponent had match points. At such a moment, you know that you have to give everything, but at the same time play carefully. I am very happy that I am continuing in this tournament. This season, I feel doing well on grass,” noted Swiateková, who adjusted the mutual balance with Benčičová to 3:1.
