Polish cure for coronavirus. Biomed has started production

The collection of plasma from convalescents lasted until the end of last week.

– The drug manufacturing process consists of several steps. Production, i.e. the technological process of obtaining a drug, is only one of them. Today, the devices have been launched and this stage has started in Biomed Lublin, i.e. the proper production of the Polish drug for COVID-19 – informed Senator of the Republic of Poland, Grzegorz Czelej, MD, PhD.

The authors of the concept of the drug are: Grzegorz Czelej, senator of the Republic of Poland from the Lublin region and president Waldemar Sierocki, member of the supervisory board of Biomed Lublin.

Polish tests for coronavirus. “We won’t buy any others”

During the press conference, the senator thanked the miners. Of the 150 liters of blood collected for the production of the drug, more than 100 liters come from miners. – The mobilization and response to our appeal by the miners of Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa meant that by the end of last week we managed to collect all the plasma. Today at At 8.00 a.m. the devices for the production of the drug were turned on – he said.

Already during the coronavirus pandemic, both the WHO and the Polish Ministry of Health issued a positive recommendation for the use of plasma in the treatment of COVID-19.

The production process of the first batch of anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin will take about 1.5 months. At the beginning of September, the titer of antibodies and the number of ampoules of the drug that can be produced from the collected plasma will be known. The first 3,000 doses are secured for Poland under an agreement with the Medical Research Agency. The Company’s priority when it comes to blood drugs is the Polish market and ensuring the country’s drug independence in a selected range of these products.

The drug should be ready for clinical trials at the end of October, i.e. in two months. This means that the first dose will be delivered to the first patient in about 8-9 weeks. After another 4 months, the first conclusions from clinical trials will appear. The drug will go on sale after passing the registration process.

– Today I am also appealing to the bodies of the European Union and to the authorities of individual Community countries to decide to establish plasma banks with antibodies in individual European countries – appealed Grzegorz Czelej.

– I am also asking the European Union and the parliaments of individual countries to increase funds for the collection and storage of plasma with antibodies. The EUR 50 million allocated for this purpose by the Union is far from sufficient and, apart from the central budget, it would be good if individual countries would also find funds for this purpose in their budgets, he added.

He also pointed out that Poland is the only country in Central and Eastern Europe that has technologies for the production of such a drug.

The superiority of drug therapy over therapy with convalescent plasma alone is that the plasma must be administered taking into account the compatibility of the donor-recipient blood group. The Polish drug for COVID-19 can be administered to everyone. It will be standardized. This means that each portion will contain the same amount of IgG immunoglobulins, so you can effectively choose the dosage.

– We have enormous hopes and enormous expectations (…). We are somewhere half expensive. The production opens up the possibility of clinical trials of this preparation – said prof. dr hab. n. med. Krzysztof Tomasiewicz from the Department and Clinic of Infectious Diseases at the Medical University of Lublin. The drug should be ready for clinical trials in late October.

For the production of the first batch of the drug for clinical trials, about 150 liters of plasma from convalescents were needed. In June 2020, Biomed Lublin signed contracts with 9 out of 21 Regional Blood Donation and Blood Treatment Centers, of which 7 finally provided the necessary amount of plasma for production. These were centers from Racibórz, Radom, Bydgoszcz, Kalisz, Lublin, Szczecin and Wrocław.
