WASHINGTON. An African American was killed by a white police officer in Columbus. This is the second case in a few weeks in the northern US city and has fueled indignation in the wake of anti-racism and police brutality protests since spring. Andre Maurice Hill, 47, was in a garage on Monday night when he was shot multiple times by the uniformed officer.
The police had received a call to go to the scene for a small accident. Footage from the agent’s handheld camera shows Hill walking towards the agent with a cell phone in his left hand, while the other hand remains invisible. Seconds later, the officer fires his gun and the man collapses to the ground. Officer Adam Coy and his colleague waited several minutes before approaching the surviving victim, who died shortly after.
Coy has been suspended. According to local media, there were already complaints against him for excessive use of force. Hill, who was unarmed, is the second African American to be killed by police in less than three weeks in Columbus. 23-year-old Casey Goodson Jr. was shot dead on 4 December on his way home after buying sandwiches.
