Police Threaten to Disband Mass Action Against Ciptaker’s Omnibus Law

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Polda Metro Jaya will prevent workers and people who want to demonstrate to reject the Omnibus Law Cipta Kerja (Draft Ciptaker) at the MPR / DPR Building from the starting point of their departure.

Head of Public Relations at Polda Metro Jaya, Kombes Yusri Yunus said the police did not issue permits for demonstrations during the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

“In each region we have also conveyed that we will disband the areas that want to depart. We have told them not to come here (MPR / DPR),” said Yusri when confirmed, Monday (5/10).

Yusri said the steps taken by his party were a form of preemptive and preventive. He claimed that his party would also be humanist in giving explanations to the public.

However, Yusri stated that his party would carry out patrols if the public wanted to hold a demonstration in the midst of the Covid-10 pandemic.

“We did patrols, met them, we all asked them to go home,” he said.

Furthermore, Yusri said that today his party is still anticipating the action to reject the Ciptaker Bill at the MPR / DPR Building. Around 9,346 personnel were deployed. These personnel will patrol to ask the protesters not to hold demonstrations in the midst of the pandemic.

Yusri argued that the crowd permit could not be granted considering that currently it is still in the Covid-19 pandemic situation. The DKI Jakarta region is currently implementing a Large-Scale Social Restriction (PSBB) policy.

“With the conditions of the Jakarta PSBB, so permission is not given to express opinions in public, especially in front of the DPR today,” he said.

A number of trade unions will go on a national strike from October 6 to 8 to reject the ratification of the Ciptaker Bill.

Chairman of the Indonesian Trade Union Alliance Congress (KASBI) Nining Elitos said demonstrations would be held in various regions in Indonesia. The climax of the action will take place in front of the MPR / DPR Building on Thursday 8 October.

“We will decide on 6, 7, 8 October that we will carry out actions in various regions, the culminating point is October 8 at the Indonesian Parliament,” said Nining in an online press conference, Sunday (4/10).

The DPR and the government have completed the discussion on the Ciptaker Bill at level I at the Legislation Body (Baleg) Saturday (3/10) night. Seven factions, PDIP, Golkar Gerindra, PKB, NasDem, PAN, PPP agreed that the bill was brought to the plenary level, while two factions, Democrat and PKS refused.

Even though it received rejection from two factions, the Ciptaker Bill will still be brought to the plenary session on October 8 to be ratified.
