Police surround group of suspected killers of Haiti’s president

New York

Police are said to have surrounded a group suspected of being the suspect in the assassination of Haiti’s President, Jovenel Moise. They are said to be hiding in two buildings in the city.

The UN envoy to Haiti, Helen La Lime, said from the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, four members of the group that attacked the presidential palace on Wednesday (6/7), had was killed by the police and six others were arrested.

“I’m also aware that a larger group of possible perpetrators have taken refuge in two city buildings and they are now surrounded by police,” La Lime told reporters in New York via videoconference.

It is known, 53-year-old Moise was killed by a group of armed individuals who attacked his home in the early hours of Wednesday (7/7). Moise’s wife, Martine, was also shot but survived and is currently undergoing medical treatment in Miami, United States (US).

Haiti’s National Police Chief, Leon Charles, said in a statement that police immediately went after Moise’s killers after an armed attack on the presidential residence in the capital Port-au-Prince.

“Four mercenaries were killed, two others are kept under our control. Three police officers who were held hostage have been released,” Charles said in a statement.

Deputy Communications Minister Frantz Exantus earlier said Moise’s “suspected killer” had been arrested, less than 24 hours after the country’s president was assassinated.

“The alleged killers (Moise) were arrested by the National Police in Pelerin shortly before 18.00 local time,” Exantus said via Twitter.
