They had used tasers in vain to stop the man, Treyford P., at first. Agents are said to have opened fire when the 31-year-old tried to flee in a small supermarket in the city of Lafayette.
The police officers were called up on Friday evening because there was an incident with a man armed with a knife. Officers tried to arrest the 31-year-old, but he fled on foot.
The police have not provided information on the number of shots fired. The suspect was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead. The media reports spoke of a dozen shots that would have been fired.
Ben Crump, the victim’s family lawyer, demands full clarification on the “carefree shooting and tragic death of the man.” He believes that the responsible police officers should be fired on the spot. “Treyford was surrounded by officers and hit more than ten times.”
Crump distributed a video via Twitter that allegedly witnessed the situation. It shows that a black man is slowly walking away from the police officers. When he approaches the entrance to a gas station, they shoot him several times and at close range.
