Police: several dead in shooting in Copenhagen shopping center | Abroad

One person has been arrested, police said. It concerns a 22-year-old Danish man. He was believed to have acted alone, according to police. His motive is not yet known.

Footage of an arrest can be seen on social media. It is not clear what exactly happened around the Fields shopping center. Local media show images of heavily armed officers around the building. Images appearing on social media show dozens of people fleeing outside, some with young children in their arms. There are now also (unconfirmed) images on social media of the shooter in the shopping center.

Witnesses told Danish media how the suspect had tried to mislead people by saying his weapon was fake, perhaps hoping they wouldn’t run away. The gunman allegedly walked through the mall with a rifle raised, without running, according to several witnesses.

Copenhagen’s main hospital, Rigshospitalet, said it had received a “small group of patients” in connection with the incident. The hospital has engaged additional staff, including surgeons and nurses.

A witness who was working in a KFC branch speaks of ‘six or seven’ shots. “People flock to our store en masse and dive over the counter. We hid in the staff changing room and later fled to the top floor of the mall. After about an hour we were told it was safe to exit. It was terrifying.”

The police urged people who were still in the building not to come out themselves, but to wait until they were taken away by the police.

The shopping center is located between the center and the airport. A Harry Styles concert, which should have taken place near the incident on Sunday, has been canceled after the fatal shooting. The 28-year-old Briton would perform in the Royal Arena, about 650 meters from the shopping center.

Several thousand fans were initially allowed into the hall and waited there. The Danish television channel TV2 reported on Sunday evening that fans in the hall had been told that the concert would not take place for safety reasons. The fans were asked to leave the room quietly.

After the first reports about the shooting, the organizer initially announced on Facebook that the concert would still take place. However, that was before it became known that people had died.

Copenhagen has been the setting for the start of the Tour de France in recent days. A time trial was held in the Danish capital.
