According to police, the officer mistook her electro-shock weapon (taser) for her pistol and accidentally shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright during a struggle. Wright’s death on Sunday sparked disturbances the following nights. Protesters attacked a police station in Brooklyn Center. There were also looting.
Police stopped Wright because the car he was in had an invalid license plate. He turned out to be wanted for illegal possession of weapons. He had fled on an earlier attempt to apprehend him. This time too he tried to escape. Police said Officer Kim Potter wanted to stop and take him out with a taser, but she accidentally fired her gun.
Black George Floyd was killed in a heavy-handed arrest in Minneapolis last year. His death sparked massive protests, destruction and looting across the United States. In town, a trial is now underway against the white cop blamed for the death of Floyd, Derek Chauvin.
