During an intervention for a family quarrel in New York, an armed man shot and killed a police officer. His colleague is still fighting for his life. That’s what the NYPD reports. A third officer managed to shoot the perpetrator, who is also in mortal danger.

A Harlem woman had called the police around 6:30 p.m. Friday. She had an argument with her son, she said on the phone, and when the police arrived, the woman with her other son was waiting for the officers on the street. She told them that her son had been holed up in a bedroom at the end of a narrow hallway.

As two of the three officers rushed down the hallway and approached the room, the door swung open and Lashawn McNeil, 47, opened fire on them. He shot them both, after which the third officer knocked him down with a shot. The sad balance: Officer Jason Rivera (22) died at the scene, Officer Wilbert Mora (27) is in hospital fighting for his life and McNeil is also in critical condition in hospital. The third officer was not hit and was not injured.

The perpetrator, Lashawn McNeil, was on parole after a drug conviction in 2003. He had already come into contact with the courts several times. The weapon he used to shoot the officers turned out to have been stolen in 2017.

At a police press conference, the late Jason Rivera was described as “a son, husband, cop and friend who was killed for doing what we asked of him.” “I find it difficult to put into words how we feel about this tragedy,” said Commissioner Keechant Sewell. “We mourn and we are angry.”

Mayor Eric Adams also spoke. “This was not just an attack on three brave officers. This was an attack on the city of New York, an attack on our children and families.”
