The police intervened Sunday evening in Biel after a gunshot. The intervention took place near the Ar’Rahman mosque.
“The engagement and the clarifications are in progress. The area around Chemin du Seeland has been blocked,” Bernese cantonal police wrote on Twitter. No one is injured yet, she added overnight.
A little earlier, a police spokesperson had confirmed to Keystone-ATS the intervention, revealed by the site blick.ch. She had given no other information.
According to a witness, quoted by the portal, at least twenty vehicles were present on the scene. The police were heavily armed. The president of the mosque’s support association told Keystone-ATS that the shot had nothing to do with the place of worship. According to him, the police operation targets a neighboring house which should have been demolished recently.
The police raised the alert around 11:30 p.m. “There is no danger to the population according to the current state of our knowledge,” wrote the Bernese cantonal police on Twitter. Investigations into the shots are underway, she added.
