Police Fleeing Myanmar Claimed To Be Ordered To Shoot Demonstrators To Death

MIZORAM, KOMPAS.TV A policeman who fled Myanmar, said he was ordered to shoot the demonstrators to death. However, Tha Peng, the name of the policeman, admitted that he had refused the order.

He said he was ordered to shoot protesters with a submachine gun in Khampat city on February 27. Then the next day, he admitted he was ordered to do the same.

“The next day, an officer called again to ask if I was going to shoot,” he said as quoted by Al Jazeera. Then this 27 year old policeman refused again and resigned from the police.

On March 1, he left his home and family in Khampat and traveled for three days. The trip was carried out at night so that it would not be detected. He then crossed over to Mizoram state, in northeast India.

“I have no choice,” Tha Peng told Reuters news agency in an interview on Tuesday (9/3/2021). He only gave part of his name to protect his identity. Reuters looked at his ID card and confirmed the name was correct.

Tha Peng said he and six colleagues disobeyed the order on February 27.
