Police and Dijsselbloem: only stable, standing fireworks in a box

The police hope that in the future only children’s fireworks and stable and standing fireworks may be fired.

Chairman Dijsselbloem of the Dutch Safety Board (OVV) can also propose a more extensive fireworks ban. “What remains are fixed, stable blocks of fireworks,” Dijsselbloem said in a hearing in the House of Representatives about the government’s decision to ban flares and blazing fireworks.

The police and the OVV are satisfied with the government decision, which will already apply in the coming New Year. “It’s a big step in the right direction,” said Ruud Verkuijlen of the National Police. At the insistence of a majority from the House of Representatives, the government adopted a proposal from the OVV from 2017.

Ground flowers

Part of the decorative fireworks, such as fountains, decorative pots and ground flowers, remain permitted. The so-called F1 fireworks, children’s fireworks such as stars and peas, are also for sale. This relatively harmless firework can be sold throughout the year.

But you can still throw with fountains and ground flowers and that is dangerous. Police officer Verkuijlen hopes that only the solid sturdy fireworks boxes will remain for sale in the future. “They stand still and people can then enjoy the fireworks.”

That is also easier to maintain for the police, says Verkuijlen. “It is much clearer for us to see what is being cut. The simpler the better.”

Tomorrow, the House of Representatives will debate the cabinet’s fireworks plan.
