State energy company Poland insists will not pay for gas Russia the ruble, the Russian currency. Poland became one of the countries that rejected Russia’s demands that countries deemed unfriendly pay for gas imports with Ruble.
“We don’t see how we can do it,” the head of the state oil and gas company PGNiG, Pawel Majewski, was quoted as saying by the Polish news agency, PAP News Agency and reported AFPFriday (25/3/2022).
“The contract… stipulates the mode of payment. It does not allow either party to change this as he pleases,” Majewski stressed.
On Wednesday (23/3) local time, the President of Russia Vladimir Putin announced that Russia only accepts payments in rubles for gas supplies to ‘unfriendly countries’. The announcement came after Russia was recently hit by sanctions related to its invasion of Ukraine.
It is known that European countries depend heavily on gas supplies from Russia.
Germany, which imported 55 percent of natural gas from Russia before the invasion of Ukraine, called Russia’s move a breach of contract. Germany’s economy minister said it would discuss with European partners how to react.
The boss of Austrian energy company OMV separately said that the signed contact did not allow payments in rubles.
