Poison centers worry about bad coronavirus practices

ANSES (National Health Security Agency) has identified in less than a month nearly 250 cases of exposure to dangerous products directly linked to the epidemic: improper use of cleaners, hydro-alcoholic solutions, and even d ‘essential oils … It recalls certain rules to protect yourself.

Are the French sufficiently informed about the risks of the products they can use daily during their confinement? For several weeks, ANSES has implemented a follow-up of calls to poison control centers for a reason linked to Covie-19, with the aim of identifying risk situations linked to containment, which multiplies the risks of contact with products dangerous.

From March 1 to 24, 245 cases of exposure to products were recorded, and 92 requests for information. ANSES has therefore issued new recommendations.

Beware of cleaners and disinfectants (and mixtures)

They represent almost a third of the exposure cases identified. Among the risk situations, we can cite:

  • Inhalation of toxic vapor after a mixture of bleach and a descaler (vinegar or ammonia, for example). Products that should not be mixed can cause severe breathing difficulties.
  • Accidental poisoning of young children with these products.
  • The non-use of necessary medical care or examinations following exposure to a toxic product … for fear of being contaminated by Covid-19 in the departments concerned.
  • Some even use cleaning or disinfecting products … to wash or clean food lest they be infected.

ANSES therefore recommends that you follow the instructions for the use of these products, do not mix them and keep them out of the reach of children, and only use them for their first use (in other words, cleaning ).

Also pay attention to hydro-alcoholic solutions

Yes, they are useful for washing your hands when you cannot access soap and water. But they remain chemicals. ANSES therefore recalls, following the census of cases last month, that it is necessary keep these products out of reach of children, just like the products used to prepare your own hydro-alcoholic solutions. She also recommends, if you are trying to make your own products (what we don’t recommend), of scrupulously respect the official instructions WHO manufacturing.

Essential oils, these false friends

The Poison Control Centers also list cases of self-medication using essential oils: either by oral voice, supposedly to “strengthen the natural defenses” and “fight against the coronavirus”, or by aerial voice (in spray) to sanitize an enclosed space, like your apartment or car.

Not only these oils have no effect against Covid-19, but they can even have harmful effects in some cases. ANSES therefore recalls that observe the instructions for use (especially on the route of administration and dosage), and above all avoid use if you suffer from respiratory ailments, are pregnant or breastfeeding.
