Washington University’s Department of Germanic Languages ​​and Literatures invites applications for its PhD program for the academic year 2023-24.

A center of academic excellence with an internationally prominent and intellectually dynamic faculty, the department offers graduate students the opportunity to develop a broad spectrum of skills in textual and cultural analysis, academic writing, academic research and teaching at the college that will prepare them for a life of intellectual commitment and professional success.

7 Exceptional Interdisciplinary Degree Certificates / 1 Unique Joint Degree with Comparative Literature

German-language PhD students can choose to earn certificates in:

  • Studies on women, gender and sexuality
  • Film and multimedia studies
  • Digital Humanities
  • Translation Studies
  • Acquisition of the second language
  • Early modern studies
  • Higher Education Administration

We also offer a dynamic and unique joint degree in Germanic Languages ​​and Literatures and Comparative Literatures, which allows students to combine their research in German literature and culture with in-depth interdisciplinary knowledge.

Generous financial support

All incoming students are provided with full scholarship support, full tuition remission, and summer funding. Students entering with a completed Master’s in German are guaranteed up to five years (and four summers) of full funding, while students entering with the BA are guaranteed up to six years (and five summers) of full funding. In 2021-2022, the average scholarship amount is $ 28,152 for 12 months, plus full tuition remission. (The University of Washington is ranked 2nd among the top twenty national universities for less expensive off-campus housing than US news and world report.)

Exceptional faculty

Our internationally renowned scholars have experience in periods ranging from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. Our interdisciplinary seminars address topics ranging from early modern witches to nineteenth-century writers, from Holocaust translation and literature to new media theory and digital humanities.

Excellence in teaching and mentoring

Our students receive exceptional pedagogical training and participate in a unique internship program to develop skills in teaching literature and culture in both English and German. They have the opportunity to teach at all levels of the language program, as well as in studies on women, gender and sexuality; Jewish studies; and film and media studies.

Successful graduates

Of the 47 students who have earned a PhD in the past 15 years, 57% are lecturers in higher education, 9% are employed in university administration, and 28% work in publishing, translation, business consulting, management of non profit and secondary school teaching.
