In the 1990s, which for Cubans were one of the most difficult times in all senses, incredibly national television managed to air several children’s programs that marked an entire generation of children, who, apart from blackouts, managed to enjoy them and keep them in your memories even after several decades.

At that time, shows like tato and carmina, Circling o The kites, and in 1990 another participation program that directly involved the little ones went on the air for the first time. His title was Pocholo and his gang and was attended by the actor Nelson González Pérez in the role of Pocholo, a kind of master of ceremonies who interacted with the characters known as Bonnetes: Pastosita (Amarilys Sánchez), Listón (Simón Casanova) and Tico (Carlos Treto).

The direction of that space was in charge of Charlie Medina and the scripts were written by Daniel Alberto Silva. And if that was not enough, the main song was played by the young actress Laura de la Uz.

Every Sunday at 11 a.m., Nelson and his companions would gather several children on stage to perform live games, while, along the way, they were interspersed with sketches dramatized, in what at that time was a revolutionary format, which was an enormous challenge at the production level and was ultimately seen as an iconic proposal in the history of national TV.

Possibly, Pocholo… he transcended the television border and took his adventures to theaters, squares and parks throughout the country. However, only five years after its premiere it was cancelled, although its legacy lived on in other spaces such as Fantastic, The Elephant and the Ant, Let’s Play or Paper Boat.

After that period so relevant for the audience on the Island, González Pérez left the spotlight for a bit, but continued to develop a great career as an actor on different stages.

On television, before being Pocholo, we saw him as El Tuerto in the famous youth series Siblings (1989). He later became Sergeant Pelayo in the second version of The little runaways which went into space adventures in 2001 and has been broadcast several times.

In addition, in cinema, he received credits for his participation in scent oak, historical feature film from 2004, directed by Rigoberto López and starring actors Jorge Perugorría and Lia Chapman.

Beyond the screens, it must be said that Nelson accumulates an important curriculum with Teatro Caribeño (TC), a group directed for years by Eugenio Hernández Espinosa (1936-2022), a playwright who won the National Theater Award in 2005. There he participated in many works, including Jazz and the one-person The old clock tells the exact time y cute stomp lizardthe latter written specifically for him by Eugenio.

At the beginning of 2017, as part of the Caricato Awards corresponding to the previous year, his representation of the character José Gustavo Campoamor de la Fuente, in the play The piñatafrom TC, earned him a nomination in the category of best male actor in the XXVIII “Francisco Covarrubias” National Theater Competition.

In addition to his work as an interpreter, in 2013, also for TC, he co-directed with Hernández Espinosa the staging of Sombras, by author Gerty Dambury, a native of the Caribbean island of Guadalupe. Later, in 2018, she was behind the staging and also led the piece Ecliptic what’s wrong with that woman?born from the pen of his famous colleague and starring that time by Estrella Borbón.

This April 30th we heard from González again when TC presented at the Bertolt Brecht Cultural Center, Rattle Toada children’s work with which they paid homage to the late founder of that artistic ensemble.

“I am very happy to continue having Eugenio among us through this creation of his for the world of children, because he was always like a ‘big boy’, thanks to his extraordinary spirit and vitality. So, wherever he is, I hope he is pleased because everyone who comes to see her is very happy.”, Nelson commented on it in a television interview.
