Plus Minus Converting the petrol engine to an electric motor

Jakarta

There was no vibration and no sound from the electric converted Honda Vario 110 motorcycle I rode at Bintang Racing Team (BRT), Sentul, Bogor earlier this week.

It’s like riding a gasoline motorcycle in general. The difference is that this electric Vario can park backwards. Yes, reverse parking.

When the gas is pulled, the engine can run backwards, not just forwards. Of course there is a button that has to be pressed together with the gas, so the bike can reverse.

In appearance it still looks like a petrol engine. But there is an extra battery inside the motorcycle seat. So the space for storage under the seat no longer works because it is full of conversion devices in the form of batteries and other tools.

Tomy Huang, owner of Bintang Racing Team (BRT), has revealed that to convert a petrol motorcycle to an electric one, it is necessary to spend from IDR 15 million.

He gave an example if you run about 60 km every day on a single charge, it costs about Rp. 3,200. “If you use petrol, it’s about Rp. 10,000 multiplied by 2, which is Rp. 20,000 versus Rp. 3,200 per day,” Tomy told detikcom earlier this week.

Motor vehicles are absolutely necessary for maintenance of oil, brake pads, spark plugs and routine maintenance. Now, with this electric motor, people can save Rp. 10 million in one year.

Tomy said, indeed within 3 years the battery capacity will decrease. Then in year 5 the battery needs to be replaced.

“Battery replacement is about IDR 8 million. But actually the savings you can get is IDR 30 million. If you collect it for 5 years, that’s a lot. But there is an investment at the beginning,” he said.

It takes about 450 watts of power to charge the battery and it can be portable, you just plug it in and you don’t need it like charging at SPKLU.

Elders Garage founder Heret Frasthio has revealed that converting gasoline to electric motorcycles has actually made motorcycle users economical. But these savings will be felt in the third year after the conversion.

In addition, the battery charging process is also easier. It can be done at home with less electricity and no need for additional electricity.

The charging process also takes 4-5 hours to travel 60 kilometers. Heret said Elders Garage currently still caters to the segment of people who like old motorcycles.

Heret added, this electric motor is the same as a normal motor that needs to be maintained. “For example, if there’s a flood, it’s like a normal motorcycle. Let’s see if we can make it or not? If it’s still a leg, it can be done. But if it goes up to the knee, why not switch,” he said.

Currently, Elders Garage has converted approximately 150 motorcycles. Mainly Vespa and Honda Grand up to Astrea Prima and Astrea Star.

In the future, the Elders will be used to convert petrol cars to electric cars. Now working on a prototype for four wheels which is in fact being collected. Like old Mini Coopers to VW cars.
