Today, the Gecko is considered more of a luxury car, yet it remains a rough helper for the army, police, rescuers and other governmental and non-governmental organizations.

Today, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is generally regarded primarily as a symbol of luxury and a premium off-road car, yet it still maintains a connection with its purely work and service origins. After all, it was originally a car developed primarily for the armies, where it still operates today. And probably for a long time.
In addition to the second generation of personal ghettos, introduced in 2018 and known as the W463, the carmaker has been producing a non-public model W461 since 1992, which is primarily intended for the military, government agencies and NGOs.
This model has undergone several modernizations and modifications during the decades of its production, in addition, several limited series have been created for the public, but it is primarily a tool for the most demanding conditions. And now a successor is coming.

Mercedes-Benz was to announce the arrival of the new W464 series, the successor to the W461, which will again be primarily intended for armies, government departments and non-governmental organizations, to which it will offer even better performance on the road and in the field.
The basis of the new W464 model with the designation G 350d should be a chassis, body, axles and a 24-volt electrical system from model W461, but a novelty will be a completely new lighting, which relies on LED headlights and LED daytime running lights. But even more important changes were to take place under the hood.
The 3.0-liter OM 656 D six-cylinder diesel engine with a maximum output of 183 kW (250 hp) and a maximum torque of 600 Nm is stored here. The transmission of power to the all-wheel drive system should then be taken care of by an eight-speed automatic transmission.

Compared to the previous generation, the new service gecko should offer 35 percent higher power and up to 50 percent higher torque. In addition to better dynamics, the car should also have a higher load capacity and should be more capable in difficult terrain.
For the time being, the question remains whether even the modern version of the W464 will eventually see limited editions intended for civilian markets, but in the meantime, the carmaker has introduced a field focused on Professional and personal geckos. And those who would not want a G-Class can wait for the start of production of the modern successor of the classic Defender Ineos Grenadier – after all, it is with this car that a rough army gecko could compete in the future.
