The national meeting of GERB after the local elections in 2019.

President Rosen Plevneliev (2012-2017) congratulated President Ilham Aliyev in Baku on Azerbaijan’s military victory in Nagorno-Karabakh and criticized Armenians and the European Union. Some of his words were also in support of the settlement of disputes in the Balkans by force.

The local news agency “Trend” he was quoted as saying that he was proud that Aliyev and the Azerbaijani people had removed this injustice and managed to resolve the protracted conflict on the basis of international law and UN Security Council resolutions.

“The Azerbaijani army acts very operatively and copes with its task with dignity,” Plevneliev added.

According to him, the country’s president resolved the protracted conflict and restored justice, which for many years proved impossible for many world leaders.

“We congratulate Azerbaijan. There are many frozen conflicts in the world. By resolving this protracted conflict on its territory, Azerbaijan has done a very important job from a global point of view, setting a good example for all,” Plevneliev continued.

A year ago, Armenian forces in Nagorno-Karabakh were defeated with the help of military superiority and attacking drones were bought from Turkey, killing at least 3,400 people according to Armenia (7,000 according to Baku). The defeat a year ago destabilized Armenia and to this day it is in a severe political crisis.

According to Plvneliev, with the military operation Azerbaijan laid the foundations for the future peace agreement with Armenia.

“Sooner or later it must be achieved and we call on Armenia to cooperate with Azerbaijan. The resolution of the conflict has created new opportunities for the development of the region. We have seen the destruction in Karabakh, not a single house remains. The fact that Armenians have completely destroyed mosques. cultural heritage, homes, does not fit within the framework of justice, but now Azerbaijan is modernizing these territories, building new roads, developing construction plans for cities. We will see new cities. Difficult days for Karabakh are in the past. , development and peace, “Plevneliev said, echoing President Aliyev’s words at a forum in Baku.

The position in support of Aliyev has been known since last year, when he also sided with Trend on the side of Azerbaijan and called Armenia’s actions a provocation.

Now Plevneliev adds for haqqin.azthat victims of separatism and frozen conflicts “Balkan countries welcomed Azerbaijan’s victory over Armenia” and criticized the EU for maintaining neutrality in the 30-year-old Nagorno-Karabakh dispute and was now indifferent to rebuilding the liberated areas.

Bulgarians were happy with the settlement of at least one of the frozen conflicts in the post-Soviet space, and this is a good start, Plevneliev said.

“As President of Bulgaria, I criticized this position of the EU, which I considered harmful. I wanted the EU to say that Armenia had done injustice and that Azerbaijan had eradicated it after 30 years. Until the beginning of the Second Karabakh War, I called on international organizations and the UN to show will and take firm action against Armenia. It was unacceptable for a UN member state to so rudely disregard international law, “he was quoted as saying.

According to him, when Azerbaijan fixes the infrastructure in the region, “European officials will finally understand that Baku is saving the authority of international law.”

The EU’s position has always been to settle the conflict through diplomacy through the so-called OSCE Minsk Group and condemned the use of military force. After the end of the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh a year ago, Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign minister, said that Azerbaijan, Armenia, Turkey and Russia had brought the conflict to the form we see in Syria and Libya – foreign forces with interests in the area supports local actors to face many casualties and destruction, and then organizes its settlement in the interest of its permanent presence.

Plevneliev is a member of the local Nizami Ganjavi International Center, named after a 12th-century Persian poet, philosopher and social reformer. It presents itself as a non-governmental organization, but was established in 2011 by a decree of President Aliyev and exists with his support. The center’s purpose is to study and present Nizami’s legacy, but it actually has dozens of former presidents, prime ministers and leaders. The center is the organizer of the Global Forum in Baku, whose eighth edition on “The World After COVID-19” was held these days in the Azerbaijani capital.
