Playstation and Xbox – Here you get the games cheapest

Today, PlayStation 5 is launched and Norwegian customers are finally clawing at the long-awaited game console. Xbox Series X and Series S became available last week, so gamers are long overdue for the new console generation.

Many have received it sad message that they will not get console at launch, but if you’re one of the lucky ones to get PlayStation 5 today or in the near future, or have acquired one of the new Xboxes, you probably have plans to buy games.

Can play old games

Both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S are backward compatible. This means that they can play virtually all games developed for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, respectively.

This means that if you have either physical or digital PS4 / Xbox games, you can insert the disc or download the game directly to the new console. With one exception, of course: the PS5 Digital Edition and Xbox Series S only support digital games as the consoles do not have disk drives.

If you have one of the digital consoles, you mainly have only one option when buying games. Namely in the console’s digital game store. You can also shop via various online stores that sell game codes, but the selection varies.

If, on the other hand, you have the regular PS5 or Xbox Series X, you can also buy the games physically in stores, and our price comparison below shows that there is a lot to save by doing so.

We check the prices

We have compared the prices of a number of the launch games for the new game consoles, but also included some fresh games and one that is on the way.

Some of the games are PS4 or Xbox One editions that also work on the new consoles and some come in separate “upgrade versions” that can be played on both PS4 / Xbox One and PS5 / Xbox X | S and which are optimized for the new consoles .

As you can see below, for example, the upgrade version of “Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War” costs 799 kroner. You can also buy the regular version for 699 kroner, but this is not optimized for PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

What exactly is an optimized game? Yes, for example, it can be upgraded with higher resolution, faster frame rate and to take advantage of the fast SSD chips.

Digital is most expensive

Overall, it is most likely to save on buying physical versions of games rather than digital.

“Cyberpunk 2077” is one of this autumn’s long-awaited games and will be launched, if everything goes according to plan, on 10 December. If price is most important, you should buy the physical version.

The price survey shows that you can save close to 150 kroner (before any shipping) by buying it in an (online) store. NOK 545 is the most affordable entry on PriceSpy – for both PS5 and Xbox – while the game costs NOK 699 in both PlayStation Store and Xbox Store.

Sony announced more expensive games

Back in September Sony announced price increase for games for PlayStation 5, which is reflected in the table below. For example, “Demon’s Souls” and “Godfall” cost 859 kroner and “Sackboy: A Big Adventure” 769 kroner in the PS Store.

Microsoft, on the other hand, has not announced any price increase, but this week stated Tim Stuart, CFO of the Xbox division, that it’s time for game prices to go up, but the company has not said whether prices for Xbox Game Studios titles will go up.

“Gears Tactics” is the only game from Xbox Game Studios that is launched at the same time as Xbox Series X | S and it costs 699 kroner in the Xbox Store. Note that it is also available on Xbox One and was launched earlier this year for PC.
